Biography: Carrie Fisher was best known for her role as Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" film trilogy.
Carrie Frances Fisher was the child of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher. Her parents divorced when she was two years old. She followed her mother's footsteps to the footlights of Broadway as a teenager, and then made her film debut in "Shampoo" (1975).
Her greatest fame came when she was crowned as Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" trilogy (1977-83). Along the way, she appeared in a TV special with Ringo Starr (1978), and as a scorned lover in "The Blues Brothers" (1980).
In 1986, she had a featured role in Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters". 1987 saw the publishing of "Postcards from the Edge", a semi-autobiographical novel rife with substance abuse and strained maternal issues. She later adapted the book for the screenplay of the film, starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine.
She played Sally's friend Marie in "When Harry Met Sally..." (1989) and continued working as an uncredited film script doctor. In the 2000s she wrote and performed in a one-woman show called "Wishful Drinking" - another semi-autobiographical tale. It was later adapted as a novel.
Along with some other original cast members, she appeared in two of the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy (2015-17).
She was briefly married to singer-songwriter Paul Simon between 1983-84.
